Spier Market: African print fabric, jewellery, loom weaving & hand-stitched leather - Unit 3
By: Kit Heathcock   (2018-02-09)

Next on our virtual tour of the Craft Market at Spier is Unit 3, where an exciting mix of bright African print fashions, accessories and hand-stitched leather are on display. This space is the domain of Nicky Mayoyo, whose clothing and accessories were among our best-sellers last year, and three artists who are new to the market: African Eyes’ striking contemporary woven and plaited rope jewellery, Chumisa Manyamalala’s loom woven beaded jewellery and framed wall pieces and McDonald Muringani’s range of leather bags, jewellery and various accessory items including products for cycling enthusiasts and pet owners. You’ll always find one of them here to chat to about their work.

Nicky Mayoyo

Nicky sources brightly printed fabrics from Congo, Angola and South Africa. Inspired by the prints, she designs ranges of clothing for men, women and children. When she’s at the market, you’ll find her busy working at her other love, jewellery design, making necklaces using beads and semi-precious stones. Read more about her work here - Click Here

African Eyes

New to our market, African Eyes make a bold jewellery range using looped or plaited cotton rope as the basis of their designs. Some are bright jewel colours, others in earthy tones. They are always experimenting with new shapes and colour combinations, with necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.

Chumisa Manyamalala

Also new this year is Chumisa who makes loom woven wristbands in different colours and widths, which have proved to be successful sellers already. The colourful patterns also work beautifully as abstract art, and there are some framed pieces on sale, as well as earrings and necklaces using the same loom technique.

Mukanya Creations

McDonald Muringani specialises in hand-stitched leather and his creative and diverse range is also new to our market. The first pieces you notice on display are the bicycle saddles refurbished with leather, together with leather handlebar grips. Then there is an assortment of bags, wallets and purses, sunglasses cases, pen holders, earrings and wristbands. And if you’re looking for a gift for your pet, or for a dog owner friend, there are leashes and collars too.
