Make It Yourself

Join one of our artists at the Craft Market at Spier and learn to make your own piece of African art. Our MAKING experiences encourage you to step outside your comfort zone, exploring your own creativity and discovering new abilities and talents. Everyone comes away with a huge sense of achievement and, for some, the creative process is therapeutic. Plus working with the artist gives deeper insight into their process and the skills needed to create their artworks.

Choose from:

  1. Beaded Wirework – learn the basics of working with wire and beads with one of our artists and make your own keyring, Christmas decoration, or some other small item
  2. Recycled Art – make a Christmas decoration or keyring from wrapped wire or let an artist show you how to "strap" the frame of a gecko with cut lengths of aluminium can, telephone wire or other recycled materials
  3. Jewellery – work with one of our jewellery designers to make a pair of earrings, a bangle - or even a simple necklace - using beads, leather or colourful cord
  4. Painting – create an art piece alongside one of our artists working with watercolour or acrylics under their expert guidance. Experiment with a variety of techniques and discover a new way to tell your story.
  5. Mosaic – get your hands dirty! Learn the basics of mosaic work or build on existing skills. Our facilitator is a graduate of the three-year Spier Arts Academy mosaics programme and can work at all levels

Each MAKING experience lasts from 30 minutes to an hour and you take home your completed piece.

Pre-arranged bookings for a specific experience a minimum of 4 people, payment in advance. Must be booked and paid for at least 48 hours in advance. All materials are included in the price.

Walk-in bookings are welcome for two or more people - we have a blackboard at the entrance listing the choice of making experiences available each day, which depends on which artists are on site. For a party of  more than four people it's best to book ahead so that we can arrange enough artists to help and make sure that they have enough materials on hand.

Some experiences are suitable for children of various ages. Please enquire for more details.

Please Note: Not all experiences are suitable for very young children.
